Panic set in.

I remember seeing this place a few months ago and decided to check it out. Good boarding within the city is tricky to find. Village Gate is a dog daycare, kennel, veterinarian, etc., etc. I took an impromptu tour the other day. It was SPOTLESS and smell free. The runs are huge and, in addition to just boarding your dog, they can partake in the daycare activities during their stay. It is a wonderful facility.

I took my dog for a day visit to see if she liked it. She's a bit neurotic (one of those nervous small dogs) and she looked great when she came home at the end of the day. These people are caring and absolutely perfect. Weekend dropoff and pickups too. Totally catering to urban lifestyles. I no longer fear my dog's care during our vacations. She is scheduled to stay there in a couple weeks. I'll give my final recommendation when she gets home - I doubt it's going to be anything but perfect.

Rating: to be filled in laterDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-55604928234365284062008-05-29T20:49:00.003-04:002008-05-29T20:53:21.186-04:00The Mower GuyNo website, not even a full name.

This guy named Chip fixes gas lawn mowers and sells 'em. Radon remediation is about as much fun to pay for as lining a chimney. Sucks. January was radon month. Here's what one had to say:
Unbelievable. I had an older Toyota where the muffler started sounding bad. I went to Midas and got a quote of $500. I asked if they could just fix the broken part. Nope. So I went to Mad Hatter on a tip. Upon being escorted out to the bay area where my car was on the mechanical lift, the mechanic pointed to the loud part and said I'd have to get that replaced. How much? "$70". What? So I let him know I am perfectly willing to pay more if needed, and say "what about those other areas that are rusting?" (I was shown those by the Midas guy). He said "They got another year or so in them. Come back when they go bad."

Rating: Highly Recommend!Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-7665365637273313612008-03-01T15:04:00.002-05:002008-03-01T15:16:01.697-05:00John Vance [carpenter]jpvance01@yahoo.com

I joined a Yahoo! group the other day called Columbus Side Jobs. Ugh. Living on the bedrock of a ravine has it's problems. Good drainage but more radon than we anticipated. We bought a couple Kidde radon DIY kits recommended by a radon remediation contractor (to be reviewed later) and the method recommended by Consumer Reports. The kits come with a sampling vessel and the lab analysis fee is included (about $15 per kit). We sampled our basement the other day. Two days of data collection and 3 days waiting for results by web. Our level was above the action limit of 4pCi/L (our average of two tests was 8 pCi/L).

Action:
Step 1. Clean up crawl spaces.
Make level (and useable for storage while we're at it). Our crawl spaces are mountainous and uneven. We wanted them smoothed out the gaps filled with pea gravel to gain a nice even surface. These will then be capped with plastic (by radon contractor). Filling these spaces entails someone lugging in lots of pea gravel (we need 50 tons!) and spreading it. The typical basement guys were uninterested in this menial task. They wanted to cover the uneven surfaces rendering their use for storage limited. The people at Mr. Mulch on 161 responded immediately to my online inquiry and gave me the name of someone who would do the job. Jesus Garduno showed up promptly and using product from Mr. Mulch. quoted me the job. 3 days work and half the price was materials. Because of the radon determination using two tests, we're anxious to get this job done. We're going to take a chance with Jesus and his crew. Respectful, pleasant, willing to haggle a bit on the quote. Good feel so far. I'll let you know how the job goes.

Step 2. The radon team. Another post.

Well, Step 1 went swimmingly as far as the contracted labor. However, Mr. Mulch's delivery of 50 tons of gravel destroyed my driveway. The fix and who's going to pay is currently being discussed.

Jesus and his gang worked like dogs and got the gravel in the crawl spaces in two days.

Rating: HIRE!
Also January is Radon Action Month (EPA).Davehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-7116902158633076642008-02-11T17:01:00.000-05:002008-02-11T17:17:42.615-05:00Payne's Sevice [auto repair]614.267.7947 3717 Indianola - no website

We have taken our cars to Paynes for years and highly recommend them. It's like an old schoolhouse. Block, uninsulated and unfinished inside and out. Painted and cool looking, but uninsulated, cold. After a bunch of research, we identified Edwards / Mooney & Moses as our insulation contractor. They provided a detailed contract, were punctual and above all, offered a great foam insulation product. For our application (every job is different and ALL jobs require a thorough evaluation and lengthy visit with an estimator - worth the time) they used a non-urethane based foam called R-501. NO smell, the workers didn't even wear masks. You could hold the new foam before it cured and it didn't smell a bit. It's an aqueous based product that sets up like styrofoam.

Our heating demands are still being evaluated since the job was done. I suspect we're saving about 15% so far this winter. Any questions on your situation? Don't hesitate to have them out. No pressure.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-26791308524732547562008-01-26T22:04:00.000-05:002008-01-27T10:08:00.181-05:00Bunk and Loft Factory<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_jKnSTNcglmk/R5v1AUHVZ0I/AAAAAAAAALs/ynD75SEUMto/s200/bunkloft.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159987183831312194" />614.484.0130 - click post title for website

An amazing local resource of rock solid furniture! This place is a retail outlet, but a contractor as well. We bought our daughter's bed and our bed there about a year ago. The showroom is a bunch of "templates" of what they can build. You simply go through the showroom, pick a style and dial in your preferences: wood, finish, slight changes in dimensions to suit your home, etc. Totally customizable because your bed will be built after you place your order. Then for a small fee, they take the bed in, assemble it. The sales people are friendly, the installers are friendly and if there's ever a creak, they'll come by (even on a Saturday) and fix it. The problem is: How many times will they come quickly? You're at the mercy of the capability of the technician. He's done nice work for us trimming trees on our home on E. Maynard and now gives us help with our new property. Last winter's late cold snap killed one of our Redbuds. He came out and told us not to worry about it, it's dead. No charge. He'd take it down but it was small enough and we decided to do it. For big jobs, he has a full crew come in and charge you for the length of time it will take for full trimming (for highly wooded lots). Smaller jobs can be evaluated without you even being there. We've done this once and were not dissapointed. He's an arborist and you tell him your priorities (I want to save the tree if possible, or I want it cut nicely because it's my neighbor's and just a small part is on my property, etc.) and he'll discuss what he'll do and schedule you.

Easy to work with. They call before they arrive so you don't lose a day of work and are always competent.

Rating: HireDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-57453804486093832522007-12-21T12:04:00.001-05:002007-12-21T12:09:33.507-05:00North High Collision (autobody repair)<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_jKnSTNcglmk/R2vyL2jA1_I/AAAAAAAAAI8/Lm7PKFboIsc/s200/collision.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146473284635777010" />614.436.0300 - click post title for website

A couple months ago, my car got rear ended. Ouch. How inconvenient. However, my daily jaunt to daycare and to work carries me past this collision shop. I went in for an estimate and asked how they are rated on Angie's List. They didn't know. They told me it was too expensive for businesses to sign up to see their ratings. I've observed rapid turnover of the wrecks in the lot and seemed a reasonable risk. They fixed my car perfectly and in reasonable time.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-25504544016331928892007-12-20T12:48:00.001-05:002008-03-19T16:38:12.370-04:00Leader's Moving & Storage Co. I'd rather this list not ding companies (unless companies are consistently poor). A company that was recommended to me was Leader's. A friend at work did a full house move (local) and another friend moved into an apartment while their home is being rennovated and Leader's did both jobs. The people that hired them raved. Both moves went flawlessly. We wish we had used them.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-39213965558333813292007-12-20T09:22:00.000-05:002007-12-20T09:26:25.360-05:00Goodyear Auto Service Center614.888.8700, 5015 N. Consequently, roofing nails are all over the place and we've had our share of flats. This garage on N. High is amazing. Couldn't get someone in in time for the holiday, but the day after Economic was there and had it fixed for a TOTAL of $30.

Sears has a decent fixit deal, but they charge $60 to come out. If the appliance is dead, you can have that cost toward a new appliance, but otherwise, you're out the $60. Most appliances, I've found are dead or cheap to fix. I'd rather take a risk on the cheaper service call. Prompt and quick to show.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-10646674570888556032007-12-13T18:23:00.001-05:002007-12-31T10:08:05.210-05:00Toni Sits Pets (animal care)<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_jKnSTNcglmk/R2G_NY7RDBI/AAAAAAAAAIg/tnLZ9ZMxqjQ/s200/dog84.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143602486184053778" />614.262.8333 - click title to go to site

Toni Sits is owned and operated by Sue and Judy and additional associates per demand. When you call him, he sends out a polite individual promptly and gives an estimate and a quick start date. He came to our home recently when I was considering upgrading our service and left empty handed. He thought, given our demands, we didn't need the upgrade. Cool. He also gave us some suggestions about using CFL's in dimmer switches (gratis).

He also did some small jobs in a snap so we could sell our old place; gcfi's, etc. Inexpensive and fast. Definitely worth calling him for an estimate.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-47969536771424078802007-12-13T18:03:00.000-05:002007-12-13T18:31:35.941-05:00Dos-Boot (computer repair)<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_jKnSTNcglmk/R2G6vY7RDAI/AAAAAAAAAIY/e-N127Qh2e4/s200/logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143597572741467138" />614.453.5049 - click title to go to site

Frankie's teacher has a computer hobbling on one leg and trying to stay alive. I can pop in a pci card and maybe swap a drive, but what to do when the problem needs serious diagnostic evaluation? I hate the knee-jerk solution so common today of "just buy another ...". Yeah, just pop the piece of junk in the dumpster and no one will care and go to Dell for a cheapie. It's an easy solution, but if a repair is possible, it doesn't just fix one machine, it prevents another from being tossed into a landfill.

So, where to go? My favorite was Computer Success off Bethel, but they went out of business. My next shot? Dos-Boot. With a clever name like that, I thought I couldn't go wrong. It's next to Joy's Kitchen in the Ohio Stater Mall. Easy parking and some hard-working lads. Brought in the machine today and although it's still in critical condition, they have a promising and inexpensive lead that may save the machine. And, fast too. Give 'em a shot.

Rating: HIREDavehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14363867140919109904noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4188372984562957416.post-11090251712515166462007-12-13T12:37:00.000-05:002007-12-13T18:32:19.529-05:00Steve Poulin (carpentry)614.296.5250 - no website

This guy rebuilt a small roof on our recently purchased home. The name is a little misleading. They do service on ANY roof. Slate is their specialty but do any roof related job. They are easy to work with, relatively fast to start a job. Once a job is started, it's done quickly. They recently fixed a small roof on our new home. The roof was an overhang to the front door but turned out to be a significant structural feature of our home; it was cantilevered from our main roof. They told me how to contact the city and get them in on the job too, because I was practically hysterical.

Ever since, they're the first ones I call.
